Sonic the Hedgehog is the main character and hero of the exciting Sonic the Hedgehog game series created by Sega. He is a blue, speedy hedgehog who can run faster than the speed of sound and curls into a ball to zap his enemies. In most of the games, players control Sonic as he speeds through colorful levels, collecting shiny power-up rings, and dodging obstacles and foes. Sonic was brought to life by programmer Yuji Naka and artist Naoto Ohshima, with most games being developed by a team known as Sonic Team.
The very first game, Sonic the Hedgehog, was released in 1991, aiming to give Sega a character that could compete with Nintendo's famous Mario. Over the years, Sonic's look changed when Yuji Uekawa redesigned him for Sonic Adventure in 1998, giving him a more mature style to attract older players. Today, Sonic is famous worldwide and is considered an iconic figure in gaming. By 2011, Sonic's games had sold over 80 million copies! In 2005, he became one of the first characters to be honored on the Walk of Game, alongside other legends like Mario and Link.
Sonic made his first appearance in a video game as a decorative ornament in the 1991 arcade racing game Rad Mobile. His first playable role was in the platform game Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, where he faced off against his arch-nemesis, Dr. Robotnik. In the sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, released in 1992, his two-tailed fox friend Tails joined him on his adventures. The 1993 game Sonic CD introduced Sonic's supposed girlfriend, Amy Rose, and a robotic lookalike called Metal Sonic, as Sonic traveled through time to ensure a bright future.
The adventures continued with Sonic 3 and its sequel, Sonic & Knuckles, both launched in 1994. Here, Sonic and Tails had to battle against Robotnik, while also dealing with Knuckles, who was tricked by Robotnik into believing Sonic was the enemy. The saga carried on with Sonic 4 from 2010 to 2012, where Sonic returned as the solo playable character. In the second episode of Sonic 4, Tails rejoined Sonic, and Metal Sonic returned as a major enemy.
Several other two-dimensional platformers starring Sonic came out over the years, including titles like Sonic Chaos, Sonic Rush, and Sonic Colors, all made for handheld devices. Sonic Adventure in 1998 marked Sonic Team’s comeback to the character in a big way. In this game, Sonic comes home from vacation to find his city under threat from a new villain called Chaos, who is controlled by Dr. Robotnik, now often called Dr. Eggman. This was also the first game to feature full voice acting.
In Sonic Adventure 2, released in 2001, Sonic finds himself on the run from the military after being mistaken for a character named Shadow the Hedgehog. Fans loved Sonic Heroes in 2003, where Sonic teamed up with Tails and Knuckles against Metal Sonic, who wanted to take over the world. Another memorable game is Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), where Sonic must rescue Princess Elise while dodging threats from Silver the Hedgehog.
In the game Sonic Unleashed (2008), Sonic gains new abilities and forms after a mix-up with Dark Gaia's powers, turning him into what the fans call "Sonic the Werehog." Later, Sonic Colors (2010) introduces aliens known as "Wisps," which Dr. Eggman tries to control. Sonic Generations (2011) gives players a unique twist, letting them play as both classic and modern versions of Sonic through levels inspired by past games.
As time went on, Sonic appeared in many different genres outside platforming, including racing games like Sonic Drift and Sonic R, as well as fighting games like Sonic Battle. He even starred in mobile games and role-playing adventures like Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.
